Powers of attorney

Two people, two jobs

One person can pay your bills if you can’t. One can speak with your doctors. They don’t have to be the same person, and the papers should say so.

  • Money

A financial power of attorney lets someone you choose pay bills, deal with a bank and manage property for you. You decide when it starts and how far it goes.

    • Starts now or only when needed

    • Limits you set in plain words

    • A back-up if the first choice can’t serve

  • Health

A health care directive names who speaks for you with doctors and records what you would want, so no one has to guess.

    • Who speaks for you

    • Your wishes in your own words

    • Copies for your doctor and your family

Helping a parent who has not signed yet

Sometimes the call comes after the first fall, or the first missed bill. If your parent can still understand and decide, we can usually get these papers signed quickly, at home if needed.

If it is later than that, I’ll tell you plainly which options are left and what each one involves, including when a court is the only way.

How I help

  • I meet your parent first, and listen to them

  • Signing at home, in a care home or in hospital

  • A written list of what to gather beforehand

Powers of attorney, in plain answers

What does it cost?

The money and health papers are part of the “Will and papers” plan at a flat fee, or a smaller flat fee on their own for one person. Notary and recording costs, if any, are extra and quoted first.

Does the person I name have to be a lawyer?

No. Name someone you trust to be organised and to say no when it’s right. I’ll help you write a back-up too.

What if my parent already signed something years ago?

Bring it. We’ll check whether a bank or hospital will honour it today, and update it if not.

Can a power of attorney be taken back?

Yes, while the person who signed can still make decisions. Tell me and I’ll help you do it properly so the old copies stop being used.

Ready to name your people?

Call or send a note. I’ll tell you what to gather and what it costs.

Please don’t send confidential details through the form.
